The Macabeo grape, also known as Viura, is one of the best-known white grape varieties in Spain. Cultivated in the eastern area of the French Pyrenees, it arrived in Spain through Catalonia and then expanded into the various Autonomous Communities such as Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León, Extremadura, Aragón, La Rioja, the Basque Country and the Valencian Community.
Macabeo is also the main variety in the denominations of origin of various regions, such as Rioja, Cava, Calatayud, Navarra, Penedés, Somontano and Tarragona.
With the Macabeo grape are produced white wines, sparkling wines and even some desserts.
Artemisa ’17, by the Catalan winery El Jardí dels Sentits, 80% Macabeo, was appreciated for its “Floral notes of dog rose and peach blossom that accompany and intertwine with fruity notes of pomegranate, delicate citrus nuances embellished with perfumes of small red berried berries”.
